The Irish Quality Food Awards are delighted to be partnering with the Coeliac Society of Ireland, whose experience regarding the Free From categories has been invaluable.

The Coeliac Society of Ireland is the national charity supporting people diagnosed with coeliac disease or following a gluten free diet for medical reasons. An estimated 1 in 100 people in Ireland suffer from coeliac disease, affecting over 47,500 people, who have no choice but to follow a gluten free diet for life. It is the only treatment for the disease with even more suffering from non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, aside from those who are follow a gluten-free diet as a lifestyle choice. The greater the choice and quality of gluten free food available, the better. In the past, people with coeliac disease were limited in terms of what was available to eat, and nutritional content and quality of ingredients were often a secondary concern.

In Ireland, the gluten free foods category is valued at over €29 million, with sales of €40 million projected by 2020. Coupled with recent allergen legislation for non-pre-packed foods, the Irish gluten free market is one to take notice of.

The Coeliac Society’s mission is to make Ireland a better place to live for people with coeliac disease.  The challenges faced by those diagnosed with coeliac disease can seem daunting at first. The only treatment for coeliac disease is a gluten free diet, and while there are more gluten free products becoming available all the time, many of the 4,700 Members say they are often confused about certain food labelling and ingredient listings.

To help Members make informed decisions when food shopping, the Society publishes an annual Food List. The 2017 List includes 6,425 gluten free products as is the definitive list of gluten free products available on the Irish market. Having your product listed is free once you can provide proof of its gluten free status and Members receive updates to this publication on a monthly basis.

The Coeliac Society also hold the licence for the crossed grain symbol in Ireland. This symbol is internationally recognised by those who need to follow a gluten-free diet, as it is promoted by coeliac organisations worldwide.  It goes beyond a declaration or certification that the product is gluten free (or manufactured in a gluten free environment). Obtaining a crossed grain symbol for your product can cost as little as €500 per annum, depending on the turnover of your gluten free products.
